I'm starting to consider replacing Big Red, but I'm nervous about getting into debt again especially when I'm trying to save for school. However, she's getting old and I don't know how much longer I can keep her going.
I've been looking into alternative fuel vehicles, 'cause, well, I'm a hippie. There's a part of me that would love to have an electric vehicle (e.g. GEM), but I'm scared by the 25 mile range.
Normally that's not a big deal as it's some 6.7 mi to work each day. However, LA is big place. What if I have to go to my mother’s or down to Long Beach or god forbid, Orange County after work for something? Will I be able to find a place to charge it up while I’m at dinner/show/whatever? Will that charge be enough to get me home?
Of course, I’m also looking at Hybrids. I already know I’m in love with the Prius. It starts with a pushbutton and that makes it one of the sexiest cars around. Also, I’ve actually driven it on the freeway as well as surface streets and I like how it drives. I’ll have to try the Honda Civic because, let’s face it, it is more affordable.
I’m considering highly fuel efficient vehicles as well. I think the SMART car is the cutest thing in town and I’ve noticed that the VW Bug has the best mpg in its class. The problem I have with the Bug is that everyone drives one and it’s standard hippie issue. Ultimately it doesn’t excite me much, but I’ll probably test drive one anyway. I want to give everything a fair shake and not simply dismiss cars that fit my criteria out of hand.
Then there are the cars that strike my fancy because they aren’t your usual vehicle. There’s the Tango (which frankly is way beyond my means), the Meyer Motors NmG, the Zap! Xebra Sedan, or any of the other vehicles sold by Zap!
