I just finished grocery shopping for the week. On the menu is:

1)Apricot Maple Glazed Pork Chops with steamed white rice and lemon garlic green beans.
2)Bacon and oniion stuffed grilled trout with salad & steamed asparagus.
3)Roasted chicken and veggies.

I feel all grown up having planned out some meals (based on store sales) and gone shopping based on that menu. But I'm increadibly disapointed with what I saved: $11.11. Seriously, my items at Ralphs cost an average of $2.65 and the stuff I bought at Trader Joe's cost and average of $2.95. That's not that big a difference!

Now I admit, I didn't buy the cheapest stuff in the store, but I bought the cheapest of the items I needed. Trout filets were on sale at $5.66/lb. I ended up buying the whole trout at $2.99/lb.

The girl in front of me in line, spent some $150 and walked out with a spilling over cart. She gave the checkout lady a mound of cupons, I'm sure she saved quite a bit. However she had oreos, sugar cereal, jello pudding snacks and orange drink.

I can't bring myself to eat that stuff anymore. I'm trying to eat healthy food and I know that's what costing me money. I bought heaps (relatively) of vegetables. I bought fruit & organic 100% fruit juice. I bought whole wheat bread w/o preservatives. *sigh*

I just feel like I've done something wrong, made some mis-calculation somewhere. All those home-maker magazines tell me that if I shop according to a plan, and buy what's on sale I'm going to save lots of money. Ultimately I don't feel like I saved much more money than if I'd shopped willy-nilly, buying what sounded good. However, I do know that if I actually prepare the food as planned, the veggies will get eaten, the fruit will get eaten and I will end up throwing less out. So I guess I end up saving money that way.
