I'm going to the fashion district with my mother on Saturday to buy an evening gown for Patch's step-brother's wedding in May. Any suggestions on specific stores?

I've already actually found one that was stunning. Patch thought I should get it. Problem? $600 without the alterations needed. I also think the dress is a little over the top with all the crystals on it. I'm going for understated elegance (as usual). I'm also hoping that I can take people's breath away (also as usual).

*edit*
It's a mermaid style dress, strapless, cut straight across the bosom; moca with a navy lace overlay with navy crystals. Wearing it with flats makes it the perfect length. I'd have to have it taken in a little on the sides because it falls away from my chest. (Like all things currently, to fit my hips it's actually too big in the chest *sigh*)

Have you no friends with the talent to do the necessary alterations for a friend [which wouldn't be me, as my talents lie in Other Directions...or just lie]? Or, how about some forsoothly contact with skille in seamstressing, who might at least work more reasonably than a snobby modern seamstress? One other consideration- it reads stunning, but would you get wear out of it for other occasions, or would the ~$600 be a one-shot? Be honest. I'd say do it, but only if you would get considerable wear out of it & the alterations could be arranged for really reasonable.
